Zero's eyebrow twitched as he stared X down, who sat pensively on the couch and giving back a defiant glare. The blond took a deep breath through his nose, held it, then opened his mouth to speak.

X beat him to it. "I am not apologizing."

That made Zero shut his mouth and the blond gave him another pointed death-glare, of which the shimmering Cyber Elf returned back just as intense.

Finally Zero spoke. "X, you will go back to the Command Room and tell Ciel you didn't mean it."

"No. I'd be lying, and I don't lie."

"X! You made her cry!"

X fumed, crossing his arms tightly over his chest and glaring at Zero's knees. "Don't be a hypocrite, you've made her cry too, a helluva lot more than I have."

Zero groaned, slamming his palm into his face, groaning again at the minute pain of his sensitive facial nerves being jarred by his gauntlet-covered hand. "X, what you said was just insensitive."

"I told her the truth! Someone had to--it's just puppy love, she is hardly old enough or mature enough to understand 'true love' and her crush on you was just a schoolgirl fantasy." X huffed, rising to his feet. "As it stands, I fail to see why you haven't tried to dissuade her yourself!"

Zero dropped his hand from his face. "I've had other things to do, like, oh, I don't know, saving people's asses and kicking others' asses."

"Like them asses, don't you?" X shot back sarcastically.

That's it--Zero had it up to here with X's moods, and he threw his hands up. "Oh yeah, X, you of all people hope to hell and back that I do, don't you, with your own little crush?"

X flinched, even going as far as taking a few steps back from Zero as if he were physically hit. Upon seeing the pure, unrestrained pain on X's face--raw despair compared to Ciel's few little tears--Zero immediately gaped and reached for X.

"Oh jeez, X, no no no, I didn't..."

"Don't even try, you insensitive jerk." X snapped, trying to cover up his hurt with anger. In a way, in Zero's mind, it was rather cute how human-like X was. "Freudian slip, much? You should learn to start speaking up, maybe we wouldn't have these communication issues!"

"I didn't mean it--No, don't you dare try to cut me off! I seriously didn't mean it, X." Zero again threw his hands into the air. "This is ridiculous! We shouldn't be having this petty, stupid little arguments and bursts of anger at each other. So Ciel told me she loved me--you shouldn't have cut in with what you said. And I shouldn't have said what I did. I'm sorry, okay? I'm sorry for whatever the hell I did that made you so pissy when it comes to me."

X sighed heavily, bringing his hands up to his face. "This is pretty bad, isn't it? It's none of my business if she loves you or not or if you love her."

"Jealousy is a natural reaction--"

"I am not jealous!"

"Quit it X, you're completely jealous of the fact Ciel can say out loud what you can barely type out to me in a data-encoded message! And you know, I don't understand why you can't!" Zero started to pace, a brisk almost military like march back and forth. "It's hard to take you seriously, X, when you lash out at every person who shows an inkling of interest in me... and you can't even say to me how you feel. How do you think I feel? From what I remember we've always been best of friends, always able to tell each other anything, why not this?"

X huffed. "How the hell am I the guilty one here?"

Zero whirled around, landing on the couch on his stomach with an irritated groan, burying his face into his folded arms. "X. Point blank. I'm telling you I want to hear you say how you feel. Just once."

"Is that why you're pissy with me?"

"Partly, yes."

X vanished, reappearing on the chair across from the couch. He stared hard at Zero, who stared back under a mass of golden hair. X opened his mouth, then closed it, then tried to speak again, yet nothing come out--the usual fears returned and silenced him.

What was so hard? Obviously Zero didn't mind--he openly spoke to X about it since X admitted to 'having feelings' for him. So rejection was most likely not up there, and therefore, their friendship wasn't going to tank the moment he said the words. So...

"I'm scared, Zero."

Zero growled, pushing himself up. "I don't bloody understand why! I've already practically told you--"

"If I tell you, then you'll tell me how you feel. If we tell each other, we'll be that much closer... and farther apart. I'm dead Zero... and I..." tears shimmered at X's eyes, and Zero's own expression softened in their presence. "I don't want you to... think you have to die with me..."

The blond sighed heavily, getting off the couch and moving to the floor in front of X. He knelt before the Cyber Elf, taking the shimmering hands into his own--the invisible hands with no feeling or touch, no heat or cold, just simply not there. But as Zero looked up at him, he saw X, saw X was there with him.

Always was. Always has. Always will be.

"This is ridiculous," Zero muttered. "Just tell me, X."

"Zero..."

"Say it, damn it."

X chuckled weakly, and while he could, he quickly muttered, "I love you."

Zero smirked up at him. "Was that so difficult? Feel better?"

"A bit..."

"Good. Love you too. Let's stop this stupid bickering now, hm?"

X bowed his head, ashamed he let something so simple become so complicated. "Yeah... I'm still not apologizing though."

"Yes. You are. Don't argue, we've proven I'm always right. So let's go see Ciel." When X made a face, Zero rose to his feet and patted X's head. "You can apologize, then we'll tell her, hm?"

"That'll make her cry! She'll hate us both!"

"That's ridiculous. Let's go."
